Our First 4-Year Scholarship.

How the Betty Kiernan Foundation changed the life of a nursing student in need.

Gianna entered Franciscan University at Steubenville’s nursing program in August 2024, thanks to the Betty Kiernan Foundation. This is her story:

Nursing scholarship

A college career and a calling that almost wasn’t.

“I would like to thank the Betty Kiernan Foundation for the help and support they have given me. This Scholarship has greatly helped me financially to attend Franciscan University to achieve my goal of becoming a nurse. Joining the Franciscan family means so much to me. I am so blessed to be here and am so grateful for the opportunity I was given.

“The Pre-Nursing Program at Franciscan is academically challenging but very thorough. I learned quickly that even though it is hard, the professors give you everything you need to succeed. They want you to know that your career is also your vocation. If you feel called to be a nurse, then you need to know that it was God who wants you on this special journey. You need to walk with Him to make it through and to give your best abilities to your work. On the first week of school my professor said to my class that your school is a prayer if you dedicate it to God. I found that so inspiring and beautiful.

“It is through the generosity of the Betty Kiernan Foundation that I was able to be part of the Pre-Nursing Program at Franciscan and experience this. I am extremely appreciative and thankful for this opportunity. I hope that I can use all the blessings that I am given to bring light and hope to the world as a nurse. Franciscan wants their students to see Jesus in all of their patients. I want to take this beautiful teaching to heart and always apply it to all that I will serve.”
